SW Ohio | I don't think I have ever mentioned this before but in 1977 I was planting a worked field with a Brillion seeder and when done I had a handful of seed still in the box, so I proceeded to move over to the next field of corn stubble and ran out what seed was left. After the fact, this turned out to be my first experience with no-till of any kind. It made a great stand and led to my doing corn and beans no-till over the next couple of years hit and miss, was still doing lots of moldboard plowing in those days. The wet spring of 1981 led to majority of acres going no-till and never looked back. It wasn't until I got a 750 drill that I tried no-till hay on purpose and do a lot of it that way now, Most of the time the only tillage before planting anything is to smooth and level rough ground. I sure don't miss three or four passes of tillage for weeks on end before planting..... | |
