We have a small field we worked down to a powder and picked 75 tons of rocks off of. We got most of the bigger ones but another 75 to 150 tons of baseball size or smaller with a ton or two of bigger, most of which are visible or sticking up some. Been very dry but beans are now cracking but not up to first trifoliate yet. Would like to roll this field, so is there a better time to do so, and is there a time to NOT do so? Chance of pop up storms for a few days which might complicate things.
If they’re up, let them go to the third trifoliate. Between the third trifoliate and before R-1 you can roll them. Just don’t go look at the field for awhile afterwards. We’ve rolled them up to a foot tall just to see if there is a yield drag or boost. The difference between the modes of action weren’t measurable. Just our experience, take it for what it’s worth. All our beans get rolled with a smooth roller every year. If not before emergence, then after third trifoliate.
