Back around the 80s I think Successful Farming had a story on the new farming, going to feed plastic pellets to cattle for the roughage, recycle it, and just feed nutrients to them with the fake roughage.
Read a follow up somewhere a couple years later that it worked, but cost more than using hay and cornstalks.....
