Diet certainly plays a part, but that alone doesn't really account for the drops in sperm counts we've seen in the rest of the world that generally doesn't eat as poorly as we tend to in North America. There's almost certainly some stuff going on that we haven't quite figured out yet, whether it's from plastics or pesticides or something else entirely--I sometimes wonder if our kids will look back at some of the things we use day-to-day the way that we now look at lead or asbestos.

I'm sure there is stuff going on that we haven't figured out, and I'm sure our kids and grandkids will look back at some of the stuff we use or do the same way too. I can understand why we used lead and asbestos though, easy to see that.

As humans we don't have a long and stable population, any more than we have a long and stable economy. Before the "great depression" there were regular depressions every bit as bad, before the "spanish flu" there were regular pandemics that were ever bit as bad also. Our human population and economy have been booming for centuries at least, in spite of pandemics and depressions. We don't know the consequences of this, I'll guess it won't be a rise in predators, but I feel fairly confident saying that human health is facing an uphill battle against increasing disease, parasites, viruses etc. due to both the sheer number/concentration of humans like never before, and also the lower resistance selected for by a booming population with nearly limitless resources.

Basically, I don't think diet, or environmental contamination is even in the top three for lowering sperm counts or overall health. Heck, women's lib could easily explain most of the sperm count drop.
