SE Indiana | I think people focus on getting the full amount of milk in the calf. We have decided that when a calf stops sucking the bottle it is best not to fight the calf. If it was with the cow and the calf stopped she would walk away till later. We have found if we practice this idea of leaving when the calf is done in a day or two it will actively fight for the bottle. However if we try to make the calf eat it will fight that much harder not to eat.
We are currently feeding a calf that only wanted about half the bottle the first feeding, ate good the next feeding. Then ate about 3/4 the next feeding, then hit the bottle hard for the next. Just our experience. | |
