Madison Co. Virginia | Open the nipple a bit for starters, then switch to a new nipple once the calf is drinking good.
Use your hand to squeeze the calf's jaw in a sucking motion so it gets the hint.
When a newborn is sucking, but is just smacking the nipple and pulling in too much air, use your hand around the jaw and the bridge of the nose to restrict the jaw movement. This forces the calf to develop a vacuum instead of just mouthing the nipple.
Stop tube feeding the calf, and give it two or three days to get really hungry. Keep offering a bottle twice a day until it takes it. This also allows the throat to heal up from the tubing irritation, and the calf will be more willing to nurse since it feels better.
