We've been that route, if you look really closely at your numbers it isn't near the profit you think it is. Long term, if you are removing 400-450#'s of gain annually your are going to be spending a small fortune on fertility if you wish to maintain that kind of production. Don't plant ryegrass if your neighbor is raising seed wheat & he takes your water! I agree, or some farms it is the right choice, managing a single farm or even a couple hundred acres of ryegrass is much easier than trying to do it on several thousand. You quickly run out of labor, and managing your stocking rates becomes a much larger headache. Running stocker cattle on our farm was the least profitable endeavor we undertook last year, steers returned less than 5%, and yes we know what we are doing when it comes to running cattle.
