Iowa | On Semi-tractors, one has to be careful that the new clutch discs(where the torsion springs are) actually fit into the inner recess(bore) of an older flywheel. Many of the newer clutch disc nowadays, are designed for the newer, larger inner diameter bore flywheels. The newer disc actually "look" like they will fit, BUT they just rub on the outer 1/16- 1/8" of that old style inner bore, thus the clutch won't disengage. When we get a new clutch assembly, we grab the first disc(says flywheel side) and lay it in the flywheel of the engine and slide it all around. It should have plenty of clearance for those springs and the metal retainers that hold them. This may or may not be your problem, but I thought I would mention it. We tend to see this on older engines at the CAT dealership. Also, if a flywheel is machined too much, the inner torsion springs can rub the crankshaft/flywheel mounting bolts.
