Likely the head gasket, had a 2.8 and a 3.1 around that vintage do the same, twice was enough for me no more G M motors of that family, had a couple friends with newer motors of the same family with the same trouble. Hmm build a motor with a crappy reputation for thirty years, wonder how that's working out? The sad thing is the other motor GM built of nearly the same displacement is very good (3.8) would'nt it have been cheaper to just build it?
