Subject: Briggs and Scrap-iron blowing smoke?

Mid-Missouri
16.5 hp i/c vertical crank engine in fancy little ranch king mtd lawn mower about 7 years old. The mower has been serviced well and the engine oil doesn't look black when changed. The other day it started to slightly give out a blue/white smoke upon throttle up or throttle down. Next thing I know, my mom got on it and it started blowing enough smoke to cover 1/2 acre. It was coming out more than an old detroit smokes. Still runs when it smokes but has less power. It will start right up now and run almost clear, but put it under a load and it will probably roll the smoke again. The compression is 75 psi with no throttle and 125 wide open with a hot engine. I pulled the plug and it was filthy with grime, but still provided a spark to run. What do you think is wrong with this engine? Piston, rings, ....? TIA
