Portage MB Canada | Auction Sale numbers are down all across the Continent, no one has given an exact reason for it though.
2008 was a fantastic year for many grain farmers and that may give them the idea to farm one more year.
The livestock industry is still in the dumper after 6 years of post BSE fallout and many livestock and mixed farmers simply can't retire yet as they hold out for a better year.
Some producers feel that with commodities being so depressed at the moment that they don't want to have a sale if they feel their neighbors have no money to buy their equipment especially when the CWB paid farmers so much less than their US counterparts received for their wheat last year
Currently we have 140 upcoming auctions in SK, this compares to past years when their were as many as 200 in the same timeframe.
Auction companies that can do 3 sales a day are just happy to have 1 sale everyday of the week.
For my farm? I'm just waiting to see what happens when all the equipment pre-ordered in summer 2008 shows up in spring / summer 2009 and the farmers have zero cashflow and zero optimism to want to take delivery. For the farmers who didn't spend all their money in 2008 there should be some opportunities. | |
