My Uncle Roger was a big farmer in his day--the 1950's and 1960's. He always said plant corn three fingers deep. He held his hand sideways and said bottom of the third finger if its dry and towards top if it was wet. He was a big man but it probably figured to 1.75 to 2.75 inches.
