If conditions are warm or somewhat dry (and expected to stay that way), then 2 - 2.5" is fine. I would never plant corn shallower than 1.5" because of poor root development and reduced yield, and would prefer to be at 1.75 - 2" for early to normal planting dates & conditions. There are many studies that have been done on this.
