| I'm not a big chicken eater but do keep a 100+ layers around for eggs for the family and to sell. I also raise my own pork and beef and sell some excess. The home raised stuff is far superior to anything I've ever bought in the grocery store. Home raised meat is not cheaper than store bought by the time you include butchering costs but the quality is so much better. I doubt I make much money from it considering how much $4 corn and $5 hay my livestock eat. My last reason is that it gives me an excuse to get out of the house in the winter. When it's cold I can feed everthing in less than 15 minutes but when I want to be out I can stretch it to an hour. I'd love to have a source of fresh milk but am not ready to make the committment to keep a milk cow for the 2 gallons of milk we use per week. | |
