The toughest part of the cow business for me is a dead calf. It isn't the financial loss, it is the idea that if I had done something differently, the calf would be alive. These life or death decisions can weigh on a person. You just have to focus on the ones that make it. In my experience it has been all about the weather. Good conditions mean good luck. Bad conditions mean rough times. If a cow loses a calf, I sell her. I don't need to be reminded of a death loss on a daily basis. It can be enough to make you sell all the cows and just be a grain farmer. Then you can whine full time, while waiting for your welfare check.
