Subject: RE: unix troubles

Wyoming

Here's a humorous link:

"The Unix Haters' Handbook"

Mind you, I don't hate Unix. If left on my own, Unix is probably one of the three systems I prefer to hack on: A Symbolics Lisp Machine, A Mac and a Unix workstation like a Sun or SGI.

The trouble with Unix today is that too many kids think that Unix-like things like Linux are a serious alternative to Windows. This is utterly fanciful hallucination on the part of Linux advocates. Most end users aren't going to put up with the crap that Unix does to its users. When you try to do something really stupid, Windows will ask you "Are you sure you really want to do this?"

Unix will just do it. Silently. Oh, you didn't want to do that? Too bad. You should have known. You want to undo it? Too bad. Unix is a one-way street. You have a bug? Don't ask the programmers. Go read the source code yourself. Oh, you dont want to do that? Well, you're just too stupid to use Linux.

This isn't an operating system -- it is a priesthood of self-selected egoists. Pfah.
