Central Iowa
I have done fall built ridges that worked okay, but ridges built with in-season cultivation is the preferred method. The row cultivated ridges when not shifted over as with strip till will have better structure and drain off (hence the reason for the ridges on poorly drained soils). The residue will move to valleys to protect the soil from erosion and should not move short of monsoon rains. At least that's the way it worked for me in my part of the world here in central Iowa.
