Been millions of feet of 3" tile installed around here. Used to be all on 30' centers, been more and more in the last couple of years on 15' centers. Even been a few guys who originally did 30' who have split that to 15'.
When I tiled about 15 years ago for whatever reason 4" was considerably cheaper than 3", so I went with 4" on 40' centers. Seems to work.
