Western OK | Yes this is hard red winter wheat sown around the 20th of September. Our wheat can go in and out of dormancy depending on the winter, they would actually gain better if it would freeze harder to dry out the forage some so it don't shoot straight through them. I don't know the percentage, but in oklahoma a lot of wheat is sown for what is called "dual purpose " wheat, sown early enough to get good fall growth, upto and before a month before our fly free date, then the cattle are removed in the first of March before hollow stem. You can graze it down pretty hard, and with good spring rains and extra nitrogen you can still pull off a respectable yield, and it might not hurt the yield at all.
We used to get more snow back when I was a kid, now it seems if we get any we get 40mph winds and a 2in snow turns into 4ft+ drifts across e/w roads. Most of our worse winter weather is freezing rain and wind nowadays.
