For my operation spares of the most important equipment is critical. I got to a point 4-5 years ago when a s680 I had was approaching 2000 sep hrs and realized it would be to 3000 sep hrs in no time. Was pushing it 350 sep hrs each fall and there was no time for downtime. My thought was can spend 100-150k on a good used combine and have a spare and replacement can be extended. I’m a pre emissions guy. Lot of guys are spending 100k plus on a lease and have nothing to show for it. Could buy a good combine every year for that. Repairs are slightly higher because you’ve got twice the parts but in theory should last longer. Doesn’t work that way. I have the mindset that when something needs attention you do it in the off season. With that thinking some things get replaced a little sooner. The risk with weather and crops sitting out is far greater than the extra cost of owning an extra machine. I will say it is slightly harder to maintain an extra machine. 1 machine you know it inside and out. I vote for extra machine and extra planter and extra tractor…
