Alpena MI | We are currently feeding 20 steers on a whole corn and pellet diet. Looking to expand a bit and add another 50 head or so in a different barn. Wondering about different options for feeding them. A neighbor has oatlage bales that can be bought reasonably. And another neighbor puts up several bags of ground high moisture corn. He and I discussed us selling them some HMC and then using a mixer wagon scale and buying it back from them as we feed it out. We don’t have a mixer wagon at this point so that is part of the equation.
The question is, do we haul our corn to the feed mill and have it dried and then the pellet is mixed in and the corn and pellet are brought out as we need it, therefore, no added equipment. Or do we try or save the drying and handling costs and run our corn thru the neighbor’s bags, and buying a mixer wagon?
If we feed HMC, how do we feed the oatlage round bales? Can we free choice the bales and use an old Knight Reel Augie or something low cost to mix the HMC and balancer/mineral? Or does the oatlage need to be in a TMR?
Is there other questions I’m not answering or I’m not clear with my details?
Thanks for your input,
Lyn Martin
