I see what you are saying about using an existing design and adding two more cylinders. It would probably be more practical for GM to just increase the bore/stroke a little and bring it up to 7.5 or 8 liters.
I don't think there's enough room in the LS/LT block size to fit that much displacement. Even the 7-liter LS7 was experiencing some durability problems due to an excessively-long stroke.
To build a competitor for the Ford 7.3, as I see it, GM has three options. Design a new big-block from scratch, add a couple cylinders to the existing small-block, or build a tall-deck version of the small-block. I don't see the big-block being cost effective. GM has built tall-deck engines before for medium duty trucks, so there is some history of such.
The question I would have about a v10, is whether it would physically fit, and whether a five-throw crank could be made robust enough to be worth it. Otherwise, that seems like the best way for GM to get a 500 cu. in. gas engine. |
