| Great question Rich, and one I have thought a lot about over the years. Because I don't live too close to where I grew up, I haven't had the opportunity to run across many of them in the past 35 years (yes we have a reunion this summer). I have written letters to some of them after seeing something in the old local paper or hearing something from my family about them. It made me feel good to do this, but wow do they appreciate it a bunch. We always took the opportunity to thank the ones that were doing a good job with our kids when they were growing up as well. With three grown children now teaching (and good ones in my biased opinion), I see how this recognition is nearly as important as their pay sometimes. I've been on the school board - I know there are bad ones, and so do most teachers if they're honest. The best thing we can do to keep the good ones teaching (a lot of them go off to something else) is make sure they are appreciated. | |
