Don't know about your 6420 but on our 4440 deere we always use a pair of needle nose vice grips. Once again I'm not sure if their the same animal but on the 40 series there's a flat spot on the shaft that makes it a lot easier to spin the clip to and then grab with a pair of needle nose.
