| Forget the chart on the drill. None of them are correct.
Do the following:
Materials:
Two guys (or gals) - one driver, one collector
Measuring wheel
Flags
2 drinking cups
One gram scale
Calculator or scratch pad and pencil
Method:
Measure 100 ft and mark with flags.
Remove seed tube.
Drive at desired planting speed. Drop planting units before approaching first flag. Collector will place cup under meter at first flag and remove cup from meter at second flag (100ft).
Place empty cup on gram scale.
Zero scale.
Place collected seed in cup on zeroed scale.
Note "X" grams collected per 100 ft.
"X" grams collected divided by 100 ft
Grams per ft multiplied by 69,696 ft. (assuming 7.5 inch spacing)
Divide by 454
Now you have pounds per acre
Multiply pounds per acre by seed size per pound
Subtract for germination
Presto Chango!!: It's calibrated.
If it is off from what you expected, check the percentage error and readjust the meter lever according to the same +/- percentage error. It is almost a linear function on the meter scale.
You'll be surprised how much this simple procedure can save you per acre.
