NW Washington
If you are cruising in the Mississippi or other navigatable rivers you really should have a radio and have it tuned to the correct frequencies. Tow boats are not very maneuverable and a little bit ornery at times. Check with the Coast Guard for the recommended radios and frequencies. Never know when suddenly your boat is going to be dead in the water or someone gets hurt or sick. http://marine-electronics.net/techarticle/vhf/usavhf.htm

Recently, locally we had a big search and rescue operation for some DS who did not return to home port and they finally found them at a hotel on another island in the sound. Their boat was moored, but they had no radio. Flying Navy and Coast Guard helicopters gets expensive and they want folks to pay up for their screw ups.
