Hey John, We have a set on our planter. as far as side i don't think it really matters, as far as position there is only one hole they will go in i believe its the back one and just leave the other rubber one alone, as far as rocks, we broke a few arms last year from rocks, but they were weak to begin with. 1st setting on springs. hope this helps
