Northern Illinois | I remember doing the same thing, about 15 years ago.
I had several broken off, and ended up drilling them out, but was able to save the original threads.
Last year I had my first experience with welding a nut to a broken stud, and must say that I was amazed at how well that worked. I had always been told to try it, but figured drilling was a better option.
I was sure wrong in my case. I drilled the first one out of a BB Chevy head. Spent almost an hour, and roughed up the threads.
I decided it was time to try the welding trick. I set a 3/8" nut over the broken stud, burned it on with the wirefeed welder, and it backed right out with the wrench. I was very impressed!
I even had one that was at least 1/8" below the surface, and used the same method with excellent results.
I'm not afraid of twisting them off anymore, as long as I can get to them to weld. The 8.3 should be accessible.
Good luck. | |
