In my life time one major change that has had a profound impact on activities is the change from gravel road's and 2 lane highways to interstate highways.  When I was young a major trip was 50 miles.  Only went to town (12 or so miles) every couple of weeks.  

Also coming to mind are indoor bathrooms, TV, cell phones, internet and access to higher education.  And , lest we forget, Walmart.
