NW Washington | Get a sledge hammer or splitting maul and a several splitting wedges. Start splitting in the center on one end and work your way down the log toward the other end, leap frogging the wedges along the split you started. Just like Abe Lincoln did it. You can sort of see how the wood is going to split after you get the hang of it. That is the way we made fire wood too in the old days before chain saws were common. Wood was cut into about 8 or 10 foot lengths and then split and left to dry. The split rails were then cut them up with a tractor mounted buzz saw. Fence post were made the same way.
Fun stuff. But good exercise, but also dangerous, so pay attention. | |
