central - east central Minnesota - | Tip guards offer little protection for kick back. I considered the tip guard as a device to keep me from sticking the tip of the saw/chain in the dirt. . . . A tip guard would mostly be in the way of cutting (unless you are simply trimming small branches). The kick back brakeing device is what really saves heads and limbs from injury on a kick back. Don't be overly concerned with kick backs, and follow the safety techniques of cutting, and you will be fine without a tip guard. I'd be willing to bet, after you try taking the chain off and on a couple times, the tip guard would stay off. The saws you are considering are all good saws, but I would not choose one over the other due to a tip guard consideration . . . . Good Luck and handle your saw safely !
