Rawlins County Kansas | Both of the Sunflowers we've had (still have 40') had the parallel double-disks and I've heard that the offset disk Sun's cut better, but haven't seen this firsthand. The soil firmers on the sides really leave a nice looking furrow in mechanically tilled or chem-tilled ground, but they are detrimental in heavy residue as they are running on the residue and probably serve as another burden on the residue cutting abilities of the unit.
The biggest advantage of the Sun's is low, low maintenance and no in-field headaches (they remind me of the old 9300 JD hoes), while the biggest disadvantage is poor weight transfer across the openers. When running our 40' in years, it is rare that our wing tires are actually on the ground when the box starts to empty.
The Sun's are a great drill for certain soil conditions/management (we have no plans to get rid of our 40') but aren't a good drill for heavy residue or hard ground conditions (we'll use the JD 1990 for those situations).
Adios,
