There are four connections on the relay you care about. Two for coil and two for contacts. You hook the two coil terminals in place of the lights. You run a NEW and heavier wire from one of the contacts (N.O. or Normally Open) to the lights. You run another NEW and heavier wire to a new fuse in the fuse block or a new fuse holder. You run another new and heavier wire from the fuse block or new fuse holder to the battery terminal on the starter switch.

And then you fix the original problem that was a bad ground for the lights by running a new heavy wire from the lights to the ground connected battery cable.
