The condition of the rubber ring that joins the metal parts is a good indication. Cracked, bulged, shedding rubber bits. Also indication that the outer ring has slipped on the rubber.
As John W says, a bad damper will break the crankshaft, especially on a long inline 6 cyl crank. DD used to warn that a failed damper on a 6-71 inline engine would break the crank within 100 miles.

JD states a years / hours limit where the damper should be changed no matter how good the damper looks.
I replaced the damper on my 4450 at the correct hours, even though my limited use took many more years to reach that number. The old damper still looked fairly good, but I changed it rather than risk wrecking what is a very good running 4500 hr engine.
