I get 7yds with the bed filled level.

I've never heard anything bad about the spicer tansmissions. You may find that the 444 doesn't have enough compression to slow you down as much as you want. A lot of guys with the pickups put an exhaust brake on.

I've found (through a lot of reading) that the DOT will ticket on what ever is higher: GVWR, GCVWRs, plated weight (truck or combined truck & trailer) or actual weight. If you're over the CDL weight limit on any of those and don't have a CDL, I'd expect you to get shut down until you get a friend with a CDL to come & get you & truck.

No clue on changing to air brakes.
