| I'd recommend crushed rock around the pole, but if you do it that way make sure the crushed rock goes all the way to the top. I know one fellow who put in crushed rock near the bottom of his posts and had dirt around the top. Guess what? The dirt provided a better grip for frost to heave up on the pole than the gravel had grip to hold it down. Looks like saving a little on crushed rock wasn't so great an idea.
