We've had PVC in our shop for at least 25 years at about 125lbs. Only one time did it break, when a hired hand jerked on the air hose too hard. It didn't do anything catastrophic, just broke off. No splinters or anything. We cut the broken part out and glued in a patch, and it's been that way ever since. Until I started reading it here, I never thought about it being a problem.
I'm not saying there isn't some danger, but we haven't had any problems.
