North Central Iowa | Doesn't matter which way the crankshaft would be turning, the piston still would go up and down(back and forth) Considering if this is a single stage type compressor.
Probably got something wrong with the reed valves or check valves, if a two stage it sounds like your unloader valve is not working properly , check your rotation direction for sure cause some compressors there is a thingy(can't think of the right word) sensed off the crank I believe, like on some champion 2 stage compressors.
