A less scary method of gouging out old welds is to use a special gouging tip on your cutting torch. Probably works better if using MAPP or propane torch. http://www.smithequipment.com/products/pdfpages2008/page37.pdf
But an air arc works wonders in the hands of someone who knows how to run it.
