You do need a 1/2" hose for a 3/4 impact, and the bigger quick-coupliers. MUCH better than 3/8 hose and small [M] coupliers.

Where I live there is a 1/2" hose straight off the compresser tank. Cheaper 5 hp 2-state.

At the other place I now have a cheap 5 hp single state. Back when all I had over there was a 2 hp on wheels and worn out to boot, I made a deal that would make the 3/4 impact hum.
Purchased a portable air tank. Removed all that fitting crap that comes with them.
Put a tee on the hole.
On the run of the tee [for you non licenced plumbers, the run is the ends, the side outlet is the branch] I put a 'M' male.
The other run has a 1/2" hose with a big female couplier on the end.

Plug the small air hose from the compresser on to the M male.
Then you have a big hose with a good size hose. Does wonders for a small compresser.
