I thought the same as you did until 2005 when we were very dry. This was the first year I had a yield monitor and could really tell what was going on. I have a 80 that rolls a little on one half and the other half is flat and can be on the wet side. I thought for sure that the half that was a little wet would be better but I was WRONG. The further I got into this section of the field, the worse it did. I don't think the roots could take advantage of the moisture there because there was too much water. We tiled that part of the field the next spring and could not believe the amount of water in the tile trenches. Must have been 2 feet of water on top of the tile when it was installed. Since tiling, that part of the field has consistently produced 210-225 bu corn. My dad wishes he would have done this 30 years ago.
