The OD 4 spd automatic should work fine, just lock it in 3rd gear when towing, which should be the same 1/1 ratio as the old 3 spd was in high. As recommended by most/all factory equipped 4 spd OD trans pickups, lock out OD when towing heavy loads and enjoy the OD 4th when running empty or lightly loaded.

The trick is if there is a 4 spd OD trans that will fit your truck that is not computer controlled or will work with your present power train computer. There are aftermarket OD units that bolt on to your original 3 spd trans to give a shift under load OD ratio. Problem is that the cost of the unit and installation would eat up quite a few years of fuel savings unless gas hits $5 per gallon..

What kind of mpg does your truck make now ? My 92 chev 454 one ton with OD 4 spd automatic and 411 gears makes 12-14 mpg at best in OD no load and 60 mph. Unless you gain 25%+ it may be a long payback at todays fuel prices.
