Not totally positive about the 50's, but the 30's had a baffle in the valve cover that stopped oil from being carried out w/the blowby. I think it's about the same setup. It was glued in, & I've seen them come loose, although usually it caused consumption of 1 or 2 qt. a day when the baffle fell off. If you can stand it, touch a drop of it to your tongue & see if it might be anti-freeze... You might just run it for a couple oil changes & see if it gets better. If it sat for a long time on the lot or something like that, the oil may be questionable. Run your brand consistently, changing brands can cause problems.
