| My opinion tillage practices should have a rotation just as much as crop and herbicide rotations. The most years in a row I plow a field is three and that is very rare. I plant notill soybeans then follow half of those fields with wheat underseeded to red clover which is then burnt down in the fall and worked in with a disc ripper to create a nice mulch for next spring. The other half of soybeans will go into corn so those fields are lightly chisel plowed and usually first year corn fields are worked with a disc ripper if weather permits. My second year corn going into third year corn is all moldboard plowed since I don't really have any issues with rootworm if I do this. Kverneland plows have the tip on the furrow which goes deeper then the bottom which helps prevent hardpan but biggest problem for hardpan is when plowing in the mud which I try not to do since it doesn't give you a nice seedbed the next spring unless it freezes hard overwinter. | |
