seed corn will pull moisture from the soil to germinate so ...
I don't know how far up into the pile it will "wick" though, no knowledge or experience.
Moisture will move from a wet object to a dry one. If the corn is wetter than the dirt, moisture will move into the soil or vice versa if the soil is wetter.
