There is efficiency to be gained by putting dry fert. in the row because you are not spreading all of your P and K on the top of the soil, you're putting it down where the plant can get it when it needs it, because it will not leech through the soil like N does. You still have to put on as much fert. as the plant is going to use or you will hurt the soil long term. Thats a no brainer
