You might have volunteer canola for years. I hear you on the hot canola, but I bet some of the canola did not get hot enough to ruin the germ. If 1% germs and your speading 15bu/ac - thats 750lb per ac, so 7.5lb might germ! we only seed 3-4 lb/ac when we seed canola!
