thanks for the input guys. further inspection this morning revealed a bearing
out on the stone retarder drum. this let the drum come up and catch the chain
on the lip on the field tracker. when the chain caught, something had to give.
in my case it was the adjusting bolt bracket. new bearing and rewelded the
bracket and all is well.
