I don't understand why everyone is telling you to convert to 3". I've ran 1.5" for years and get along fine with it-in no till soybeans. One poster mentioned that he replaced a 1.5" that wouldn't cut with a new 3" and guards and it was great. Well, if you replaced a 1.5" that wouldn't cut with a new 1.5" and guards, it would be amazing too how much better it cut than one that was worn out.
I do keep my cutterbar in good adjustment and make sure that everything is correct-and then it works great. Just too much vertical play between the guards and sickles will make it cut like you mentioned-maybe a 3" is more forgiving, but a 1.5" properly adjusted will work right also.
