In sandy or dry soil conditions, 40 lbs N may indeed be the limit. If no-till into decent moisture in a soil with a fair amount of clay and silt, then going up to 100 - 160 lbs/a of actual N can be done with very little risk, although I would prefer a placement more like 3x0 or 4x0 rather than 2x2. '4x0' means 4 inches laterally from the seed row, but at the same depth as the seed, or even slightly shallower. Agronomically, there is no problem at all with the shallower placement in no-till conditions.
